IELTS Bar Chart: Modes of Transport in a European City

The given bar graph presents the percentage of total travellers, who used various types of transportation such as bus, car, bike and walking to travel and for work in a European city during the period from 1960 to 2000.

In the year 1960, car was least used as a method of transportation was around 7% using by population. The number of population who used car was grew steadily and in 2000 it was more than 35% . While, almost 34% European population had been chose walking to went to their destination in 1960.In the next 40 years, population was less interested in walking, it fell to 9%.

Analysing the data of remaining 2 modes of transportation, bike was preferred by a quarter of population to compared to bus. There was a gradual decrease in the percentage of bike and it was just 5% in 2000. Whereas, bus was preferred by only 17% of Europeans and the number was increased in the next years then decreased in 2000 was 15%.

Overall, car was most popular amongst European population, while bike and walking was least popular in the modes of transport.

Given is a diagram demonstrating transport modes in a European city between 1960-2000.

In general, the chart shows the percentage of total travelers in Europe based on the popularity of transportation methods, which are divided into four types: bus, car, bike and foot.

Taking a closer look, in 1960, walking was the favorite method of transporting, it was about 34%. After that, biking was the second popular vehicle, that represented around 26%. then subsequently, taking bus was about 17% , and using car had the least generality, 5%.
In 1980, priorities had changed and taking bus was the favorite travel option, it presented approximately 25% which increased about 8% in 20 years. Interestingly, the use of car soared to around 22%. And both of the biking and walking decreased to 20% and 17%.

In the last two decades (1980-2000), the popularity of the using car went up to about 35% which was the highest rate of the transportation usage in the past 40 years. So after that growth, other transite modes respectively decreased. For instance, taking bus fell to 15%, biking dropped to 5% and walking reduced to around 9%.

Overall, over the given period, the use of cars increased while the percentage of people commuting by bike and walking dramatically declined.

In 1960, walking was the predominant mode of transportation for commuters, constituting approximately 35%. Meanwhile, bike usage was 25%, taking the bus under 20%, and car usage was at least 5%.

However, in 1980, a significant shift occurred as commuters increasingly favored vehicles over other modes of transportation. Bus and car usage rose to almost 25% and over 20%, respectively. While biking decreased to 20% and walking declined to around 10%.

Lastly, by 2000, the car had become the primary mode of transportation for 35% of commuters. On the other hand, bus usage declined to nearly 15%. Walking and biking to work decreased to under 10% and over 5%, respectively.
